FGCU Adventure Abroad 2019: June 13 - 14 Free Day in Rome & Travel Back to The USA!! (by Kat P-H. and Kalie M.)

Days 14 & 15: Free Day in Rome & Travel Back to the USA!!!

Kat and João enjoyed some bruschetta.
The day started out pretty late for Kat and Kalie. We might have slept in but we were well rested for our next adventure! We met up with my friend João from Brazil. I met him on the last study abroad trip and we have kept in contact ever since. We took the subway to Spagna, but we took the wrong exit when leaving the subway station. We ended up in the Borghese Gardens and had a lovely walk back to the city where we ate lunch.

Mango, raspberry, and Frutti di Bosco Gelato!
Kat and Kalie doing souvenir shopping
After lunch our terrific trio navigated our way towards the Pantheon with our handy dandy map! We did some final souvenir shopping along the way. We got some Gelato and ate it outside the Pantheon while we waited to meet up with Anne-Marie.

Ceiling of the Pantheon
The time finally came and we found our group for the guided tour of the Pantheon led by Anne-Marie. She told us about the waffle like structure that the ceiling had. She compared waffles and pancakes and it gave all of us an excellent understanding of why the squares in the ceiling would make such a strong structure for the round building. The Pantheon was stellar. It's incredible how well-preserved it is. Some of us stood around and pondered about the placements of the statues of the gods. The statues are no longer there. We were speculating about the order they might've been placed in.

Classic Gnocchi & red sauce
Our view at dinner
We had a lovely dinner with our whole study abroad group in the Trastevere area on the riverside. We went around the time of the sun setting. The light was bright in some of our faces but the minute the sun hit past the horizon it was a gorgeous sight to see. A lot of us tried new dishes while others stuck with their classic Gnocchi with red sauce! We sang and danced along the river as we paid.

When we got back the ladies in room 34 had a Taylor Swift dance party. It was 5pm in the USA when we had gotten back and she had finally announced the name of her 7th album and that she was releasing a single the next day. As we got ready the next morning we jammed to it.

Sleepy GerrBear
We had a 6am meeting time downstairs of the hostel and set sail back to Fort Myers! We had a 10 hour flight from Rome to Atlanta and then about an 8 hour layover in Atlanta. Many of us passed the time with naps. After many hours of traveling later we arrive back home in Fort Myers at 11:30pm! Our group took our very last and final picture of many cranky/tired faces. We will miss you Europe, but it sure does feel good to be back home!
