Top 3 Places to Visit in Rome, Italy

Hello everyone and welcome to our blog about the Top 3 Places to Visit in Rome Italy!! We are Rachael and Stephanie, and we are best friends who love to travel the world! We are here to share some interesting facts and history about our favorite places in Rome, Italy. We are going to be sharing some interesting facts about three historic places because they each have so much history and many stories to share!

The Historic Colosseum

The Colosseum ~ Rome, Italy
(Rome: Skip the Line Colosseum Tour, n.d.)
The Colosseum is located to the east of the Roman Forum and was commissioned between A.D. 70-72. It was opened by Vespasian’s son, Titus, with 100 days of games, which included gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights. The Colosseum was used for over four centuries but later fell into neglect after suffering from natural disasters and was used for building materials. By the start of the 20th century, two-thirds of this historical landmark had been destroyed due to a combination of weather, natural disasters, neglect and vandalism. Despite all the long history of deterioration, the Colosseum
has remained one of the most tourist visited sites in Rome (Colosseum, 2009).

The Palatine Hill

The Palatine Hill ~ Rome, Italy
(Palatine Hill Rome, n.d.)
The Palatine Hill is one of the most ancient part's of Rome, Italy. Palatine Hill is a centerpiece of Rome, and it is a large open air museum located between the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus. In 44 BC, Emperor Augustus built his home on Palatine Hill, and all future emperors also lived there during their reign. Some archaeological studies show that all military power began at Palatine Hill dating back to nearly 1000 BC. In the 16th Century, the Farnese Gardens were built within Palatine Hill, and a huge portion of the garden is still intact today (Palatine Hill, n.d.).

The Roman Forum

The Roman Forum ~ Rome, Italy
(Roman Forum, Rome, n.d.)
Located at the center of Rome is the famous Roman Forum. When Romulus was king, him and his rival, Titus Tatius, would meet at the Roman Forum since this became a neutral meeting place for them. The Roman Forum was used as a marketplace for normal day-to-day shopping, however, in approximately 500 BC, it became a place for public meetings to be held. Over the next couple of centuries, the Roman Forum grew and expanded with statues and arches and basilicas. Around 410 AD, the Roman Forum was destroyed, and during the Middle Ages, the land was used as a field for grazing animals. In 1803, and for the next 100 years, the land was excavated and and cleared. Now, tourists and locals who come and see the Roman Forum get to see the ruins that have been left behind. Every day excavations are happening, and efforts to preserve these wonderful ruins (Roman Forum, 2018).

We hope you enjoyed learning about some of our favorite places in Rome! It is an amazing city with so much culture and history. Hopefully you'll enjoy exploring these historical places one day, and hopefully you'll be lucky enough to experience them with your best friend!
