What ATHENS in Greece, Stays in Greece

Hello, our names are Kat & Kalie. Last semester we worked on an album together called, The Lavender Theory. Kat wrote the lyrics and composed the music and Kalie sang. Together, we fully demoed four songs. Check us out on SoundCloud, @thelavendertheory. We chose this topic because Kat is very persuasive. She studied classical studies in High School and is especially excited about visiting Greece.

Acropolis of Athens!
Acropolis of Athens
  • It comes from the Greek words, Akron & Polis, which translate to, high city, or city in the air.
  • Built by Pericles
  • Damaged during the Morean War by Venetians because the Parthenon was used as gun powder storage and it was hit by a cannonball, & therefore exploded.
  • Contains: The Erechtheion, The Propylaea, The Temple of Athena Nike, The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, & The Parthenon
  • In order to get marble to build it they used a downhill road to get the Marble from Mount Pentelicus.

Theatre of Dionysus!
Theatre of Dionysus
  • Birthplace of theatre!!!!
  • Theatre located on the south side of the Acropolis, below the Parthenon.
  • Originally created as a temple to honor Dionysus in 6 BC.
  • Festival of Dionysus was hosted here in August.
  • FOD was a festival where 3 selected playwrights would compete.
  • 3 comedies and 3 tragedies would be performed.
  • Theatre now sits about 17,000 spectators.
  • Often had sacrifices before performances.

Odeon of Herodes Atticus!
Odeon of Herodes Atticus

  • A large covered theatre built in the 2nd Century AD.
  • Odeum- refers to a concert hall, which was usually smaller in size and covered with roof.
  • Herodes Atticus- A wealthy Greek aristocrat and Roman senator who funded several public building projects.
  • Built the odeon in memory of his wife.
  • Some say he had his wife killed and built the odeon to assuage his guilt.
  • 32 Rows of seating and can accommodate nearly 5,000 patrons.

  • Acropolis Museum!
    The Acropolis Museum
    • Focused on the findings of the archaeological site of Acropolis of Athens.
    • Houses artifacts found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes. (4,250+ objections in collection)
    • Founded in 2003 and opened in June 2009.
    • Museum is the largest modern building erected so close to the Parthenon.
    • First museum was on the Acropolis and completed in 1874. With new artifacts arising they found the museum unsuitable to contain the excessive amount of artifacts. They then had multiple unsuccessful competitions to open and build a new museum and finally found it appropriate to open and build the Acropolis Museum after many years.
